Replacing an old database application, and upgrading the office network with Linux servers.
Wiak had two inter-related bits of work that needed doing. Their trade records were kept in a proprietary database system built on Clipper, which couldn't be modified and only allowed a limited number of users access. They also wanted to centralize their office network, sharing printer and file storage. Since the database system ran through Novell networking, the rest of the office network had to support this, complicating management.
First I tackled the trade database, building a new system using Linux, Apache and PostgreSQL. Users connected through a web-based interface allowing access from any machine in the office without special installation. This was coded in Perl so it could be easily extended or altered in future.
Once the new trade system was operational, I set about rebuilding the rest of the office network using TCP/IP and the native Windows protocol, SMB. We added a central file server, backed up (along with the trade database) to a tape backup system and shared two central laser printers. This machine ran Linux with Samba.
When this was finished, we added web and e-mail servers, freeing them from dependence on their local ISP. I set up a simple web page for them and later added the first stage of an online catalogue and ordering system.
Comment from Bernhard Schlun, Manager of Wiak:
Mr. Bougerolle developed and implemented a new trade record system for us, consulting with the staff and management for desired features. The changeover to it went smoothly and has improved our efficiency. Furthermore, Mr. Bougerolle upgraded our office network, integrating the staff’s Windows computers with a central Linux file server and shared
printers, and also set up e-mail and web servers giving our company more Internet presence. He responded quickly and effectively to emergency calls and service requests and was generous with relevant advice.
